Healthcare providers and patients may inquire with pharmacists about new medications approved by the FDA, especially with direct manufacturer to consumer advertising. Therefore, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians must seek knowledge of new medications to properly dispense them and educate patients and providers regarding their use. This educational session will provide an overview of several new medications approved in the past 12 to 18 months. The most critical information for each new medication will be emphasized.

Learning Objectives - Pharmacists
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Outline the therapeutic indications of recently FDA-approved prescription medications.
  2. List unique pharmacological properties for each new prescription medication.
  3. Recall common side effects, contraindications, known drug interactions, and/or warnings associated with each new prescription medication.
  4. Identify available dosage forms and standard doses available for each new prescription medication.
  5. Summarize potential barriers related to the implementation and/or utilization of each new prescription medication at practice sites.
