Recent updates in antiretroviral therapy has changed the trajectory of outcomes for people living with HIV by dramatically reducing transmission, morbidity, and mortality. First line therapeutic options are plentiful and straightforward. However, disease management strategies are more difficult for patients who have developed multidrug resistant HIV. This course will provide updates on the management of patients living with HIV, including the appropriateness of therapy and essential counseling topics.

  1. Recall the pathophysiology of HIV.
  2. Discuss the preferred antiretroviral regimens for patients living with HIV.
  3. Summarize the evidence supporting the use of two-drug regimens vs. the traditional three-drug regimens.
  4. Explain the educational needs of patients receiving treatment for HIV.
  5. Develop an approach to evaluate the safety and appropriateness of HIV therapy.
